About Goodyear Arizona
Located in the West Valley, Goodyear, Arizona has grown from its agricultural roots into one of the Phoenix metropolitan area’s thriving communities. It is one of the ten fastest growing cities in the United States. The city takes its name from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which purchased land in the area in the early 1900’s to grow cotton used in the production of airplane tires. Today, Goodyear is home to a mix of established neighborhoods, active-adult communities, and some of the West Valley’s most popular master-planned developments. Estrella, one of Goodyear’s best-known communities, stretches across the foothills of the Estrella Mountains and includes neighborhoods such as Mountain Ranch, Montecito, Lucero and CantaMia. History of Goodyear Arizona
Goodyear Arizona began in 1917 when the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company bought 16,000 acres of land to grow cotton for vehicle tire cords. Paul Litchfield purchased the land during a cotton shortage in World War I. The area was first called Egypt before becoming Goodyear. During World War II, the U.S. Department of Defense built an aircraft factory nearby. The Goodyear Aircraft facility made parts for military planes, fuel tanks, and airships, employing thousands. Goodyear officially incorporated as a town in 1946 with just 151 homes, 250 aprtments, and a few basic local shops. After the war, the manufacturing plant shifted to building missile components and aerospace parts. The local airstrip eventually became the Phoenix Goodyear Airport.
