About Mesa Arizona
Located in the East Valley, Mesa is one of the Phoenix metropolitan area’s largest and most diverse communities. The city stretches from established neighborhoods near Tempe and central Mesa to newer developments extending east toward the Superstition Mountains and southeast toward the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway area.

History of Mesa Arizona
Long before modern settlers arrived, the Hohokam people built an extensive and advanced network of canals across the Mesa area starting around 800-1200 CE. Some of these ancient waterways were so efficiently designed that modern civil engineers incorporated portions of them into the present-day Valley irrigation system.
Mesa’s modern history dates to 1878, when settlers arrived in the Salt River Valley and established the original Mesa townsite. Water played an important role in the community from the beginning. Early settlers constructed canals to bring water to farms, gardens and homes, building upon a region where the Hohokam people had created an extensive canal system centuries earlier.
The original Mesa townsite covered approximately one square mile, with unusually wide streets and large residential lots.
